Choosing the Right Trainer
It can be hard to pick the right dog trainer for you and your dog: there are so many trainers, and there’s no governing body that certifies or regulates the industry, which means that there’s a vast range of skill levels out there all trying to get your business. Here are a few things to consider:
Is the trainer listening to you? If the trainer has a pre-set program that is applied to every dog, then he/she might not be skilled or experienced enough to utilize a variety of methods and techniques to train your dog.
Can the trainer explain why he/she would do X in a way that you understand? It’s important to know why a certain tool or technique is being used: if he/she cannot specify why, then go elsewhere.
Can the trainer explain how to do X in a way that you understand? There are some very good trainers who are awful at explaining things to owners. Visual demonstrations are important, but so is the ability to articulate the details of the process. Even if you send your dog to a trainer for a full spectrum of training, you still need a full explanation of how to continue at home with your dog.
It’s worth it to do your research: the right trainer can help you and your dog reach your goals and coach you through any hiccups along the way!
